Back and Neck

Back and neck injuries are the most common personal injuries suffered in NJ and Pennsylvania car accidents.  The back and neck are made up of many intricate bones, muscles, ligaments, discs, cartilage and other body structures. When these delicate body parts are thrashed and twisted in a car accident, they can be broken, ripped, stretched, and become deformed.  Like other muscles of the body, the muscles of the back and neck have the ability to repair themselves.  Unfortunately, many of the other structures of the back and neck could be permanently damaged, causing intense pain and suffering.

A major structure of the back and neck is the spinal column which contains the spinal cord, vertebrae, nerve endings, and intravertebral discs.  Although the vertebrae are designed to move, flex, and protect the spinal cord and nerve endings, the strong force of a car accident or other jarring personal injury can break the vertebra and sometimes sever or damage the spinal cord or nerve endings.

Car accidents cause back and neck injuries every day. Learn what is causing your pain.

Between the vertebrae are spinal discs which act as shock absorbers which allow the vertebrae to twist and flex.  If we did not have discs in our back and neck, we would not be able to bend over, sit or do many of the activities of life.  When the discs between the vertebrae are damaged or misshapen, disc material can press on the nerve endings or the spinal cord causing severe pain, numbness, tingling, and other symptoms of nerve damage.

Damage to the muscles of the back can cause cramping or what is known as muscle spasm, which is a painful and sometimes violent tightening of the muscles in a certain area of the back or neck.

Doctors who treat the back and neck include chiropractors, physical therapists, orthopedists, neurologists, acupuncturists, and surgeons. Radiologists examine MRI filmsCAT scans, and x-rays of the back and neck in order to diagnose the numerous types of back and neck injuries that car accident victims are prone to.

If you are suffering from back or neck injuries from a PA or NJ car accident or other type of traumatic event, it is important to get the proper medical treatment.  You should be getting quality medical treatment from a doctor or other medical provider who regularly treats Pennsylvania or New Jersey car accident related injuries. Your neck and back doctor or medical provider must be able to document your neck and back injuries so that your injuries can be proven to an insurance company or a jury.
